Star Trek IV is coming to life.....

According to Slashdot this morning, German scientists have created transparent aluminum. Somehow I'm just put into mind of Scotty at the plexiglass factory in San Francisco during Star Trek IV - "What if I could show you a material that's just as strong as your 6-inch thick plexi, but be only one inch thick?" The guy responded with "well, that would take years to develop....yes!!!" Y'know, it's been 16 years since 1986........... ;)

The article linked to on Slashdot is from a German magazine, but I can't get the babelfish to work. If someone nabs a translation, let me know. Thanks!

I got the translation to work, but it's really awful. The stuff is basically aluminum oxide - the same stuff as corundum (rubies, sapphires, etc.) which we've been making for a long time. Don't think it's been made in tiles this thin before, though.
