exercise, books, hockey

Three weeks ago, ezzie00 and I started being serious about exercising. Every Monday I put on my exercise clothes, weigh myself, and measure my waist and hips. As of today, I've lost two inches from my hips and one from my waist, while keeping a constant weight. Yay!

Barnes and Noble is teh win! I picked up Fool's Errand by Robin Hobb and Sword Sworn by Jennifer Roberson today after work. Now to try and make it through them before Shadow Puppets by Orson Scott Card comes out later this month.

Red Wings are playing Colorado now, and I watched while I did my half hour of stretching for today (knee is too stiff for much else). Wings are leading 2-1 after the second period, and there have been several good fights. Yay hockey!

Wow, congrats. Good luck in keeping it up.

I'm curious, though: what exercises have you been doing? I want to get more active, and specifically want to lose an inch or two from my waist, but don't really know what to do to work on that particular area.

Well, I'm doing a combination of belly dancing and low-impact aerobics. I've got an old "buns and abs of steel" video that has a half hour of aerobics followed by a half hour of toning exercises, and I use it just for the aerobics. So Monday and Wednesday I do aerobics, and Tuesday I have belly dance class, and Thursday I practice belly dance. I also do a sit-up regimen that my belly dance teacher recommended every day, as well as some modified exercises from the toning part of the video. If I'm going to be athletic on the weekend then I don't add anything else, but if nothing's planned then I'll do a combo stretching/belly dance workout at some point during the weekend.

I think most of the loss is from the situps, which aren't exactly explainable over LJ. My teacher swore by them, and she's great looking for a 20 year old, let alone the 50+ she actually is, so I gave them a shot.

Belly dance. Grn. I so need to get off my butt and get into a good belly dancing class around here. I've only wanted to do that for a couple decades...

Trust me, it's very worth it. :) Make sure to get a good teacher, however, and that the classes are small. My teacher has danced for over 20 years, and taught for about 15. She teaches out of her basement, and runs beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes, usually with a low/high separation in each category.

Not only do you get to learn fun moves, but you look better and have an excuse to buy and make nifty costumes. I bought my coin scarf downtown at an Egyptian store, made my veil out of purple chiffon, and am probably buying a purple velvet top from a classmate who doesn't like the color. :D

If you don't mind my asking, what were your measurements before you started your workout?

That's fine, I don't mind too much. Heck, I'll be getting measured for the wedding dress sometime in the next week so there will be lots more. ;) When I started my waist was 29 and my hips were 39, now they're at 28 and 37. Now I'm not exactly sure where to measure hips, so I just guessed and have been measuring the same place every time. That way if I'm wrong, I'm still getting proportional measurements.

And this is actually only two weeks of stuff, it was the third Monday that I had measured myself. If you like I"ll try to describe the situps that I do, as I think they're pretty helpful. Anyway, sounds like you had a good workout tonight, so good luck in keeping it up.

Yeah, I am really interested in the situp routine, if you can try to describe it. I'd had problems in the past of trying to do things that don't hurt my back too much. I'd really like something that will work my lower abs, which are mostly numb, but I can't tell if anything does that except for leg crunches, and even that feels too high.
